Getting Ready for or Recovering from a Move? 7 Tips to Settle into Your New Home
Pack (and Unpack) Strategically
When your new space is cluttered with boxes, movers, takeout boxes, and friends and family, the chaos feels never-ending. The first step in organizing that chaos: carefully packed and labeled boxes. As you pack, try to organize items not only by room but also by location within the room—vanity cabinet items in one box, towels in another, shampoos and soaps in another, etc.
When unloading, ensure boxes are placed in their designated areas rather than piled near the door. Before unpacking, assemble large furniture first to create a functional space for rest. Skipping this step could leave you exhausted and sleeping on the floor!
Prioritize unpacking based on your immediate needs:
- Unpack work clothes first if you’re heading to the office the next day.
- Focus on the kitchen if hosting a potluck brunch.
- Address fragile items early if peace of mind is a priority.
Take the Time to Downsize
Decluttering before or during packing saves time and energy. As you unpack, assess each item critically. Donate decor or belongings that no longer fit your vision for the new space. Avoid hoarding “just in case” items—free up storage for what truly matters.
Think of the Children (and Pets!)
Moving can be overwhelming for kids and pets. Maintain excitement by framing the move as an adventure. Assign children small tasks like unpacking their toys or directing furniture placement. For pets, introduce them to the new home early with familiar toys or blankets. Keep caged pets in their permanent spot to minimize stress.
Take a Hammer to Those Walls
Hang photos or artwork early to create a sense of belonging. If permanent décor feels daunting, use temporary solutions like standing frames or decorative accents. The goal is to make the space feel like yours, even if perfection comes later.
It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Step outside to recharge. Explore local parks, shops, or restaurants. Familiarizing yourself with the community accelerates the feeling of home. Remember: your house is just one part of a vibrant new world waiting to be discovered.
Channel Your Inner Gatsby
Host a casual gathering to break in your new space. A low-key game night or potluck relieves the pressure of perfection. Let friends see your home in progress—it’s a lived-in space, not a showroom.
Give it Time
Adjusting to a new home takes patience. Experiment with layouts, rearrange decor, and embrace the process. Over time, the unfamiliar will become familiar, and the house will transform into a true home.
